Being a minister, one would think that all I think about is Christianity. For the employer it is supposed to be that they will be reimbursed in their tax returns the following year. The stipulation that most people don't know about is that the reimbursement is dependent on the amount of employee hours that they have had that year. So, if the employer has a lot of people that are laid off and does not have a lot of employee hours stacked up they get nothing back. Now, if an employer has a lot of people on Cobra, how is he supposed to get the employee hours? They are getting ripped off.

As for the employee the cobra payment that is supposed to be for only 1/3 the payment sounds good right. Well the fact is that the law never stated that the insurance companies could not raise their rates. For a three person family such as myself the 1/3 payment is aprox. $400.00 a month payments. That means that the insurance company is collecting approx. 1,200 dollars a month on a 3 person family. Does this seem like a rip off to anyone else? How is a person who has been laid off so long that their insurance has run out supposed to afford the Cobra plan?

As far as I'm concerned the public in general is getting ripped off by the insurance companies. Does Obama have stock in some of these or what? I love Nepal. I love Kathmandu. If we examine the conflicts in the world we see

First of all, the question you need to ask yourself is exactly what kind of people you are trying to attract to your business. Newbies? Boomers? Spammers? Opportunity jumpers? Or is is perhaps ENTREPRENEURS?

Entrepreneurs come in all shapes, sizes, ages, colors, countries, budgets, skill sets, and commitment ranges. First of all, EVERY DAY? Are you sure? There hasn't been a SINGLE day in ten years that you didn't make money on the Internet?

3. YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!!!! -- No I don't. One of the major reasons we have chosen to work for ourselves is because we don't take orders very well, and that looks suspiciously like an order.

**********How I Use Business Social Networks to Build My Business**********

Disclaimer: This is the process I quickly go through when I am working on networking sites, where I have been very successful. I?m not saying everyone should do it my way, but this is what has worked very well for me. I have this checklist that I go through almost instantly on every comment, email, or page that I visit.

When I login, I start with the friend requests. The reason for this, is if someone left me a message and a friend request, I want to get the friend request first, so I don?t leave a non-appropriate comment back. I NEVER click on ?accept all.? For each friend request, I visit their home page and leave a short message saying thanks for the invite. I then go back to the friend?s page, and click accept for that person.

I then go to comments on my page. I ALWAYS have my settings to "approve comments." This keeps spam off my page. If it is a comment made to me:

**IMPORTANT NOTE*** If someone has left an extremely long introductory message (more than about 10 lines), an obviously hyped up one ("I am the Greatest, and make $2000 a day!!!!), or anything else that is not consistent with how you want to do business, delete it. Believe it or not, people also evaluate your page by what you leave on it. DON'T LET YOUR PAGE BE SOMEONE ELSE'S ADVERTISING VENUE.

1. If it has anything but text, I delete it without reading it. I hate banners, cutesy graphics, and canned emails. I have already seen all the banners, and read all the canned emails, so I don?t need them. I think the cutesy graphics belong on a social networking site, not a business site. 2. If someone?s first contact with me is a business pitch, I delete it. If you had read my page, or knew me at all, you would know that I have more than enough going on now, and am not looking for more. Later, after we have communicated a few times, I am way more likely to see if what you have fits into my overall business plan. 3. If it has an inactive link (?Visit My Site NOW!!!) that doesn?t work, I assume you are just getting started with the Internet stuff, and you should probably be listening to me rather than me listening to you. I leave the message. 4. If it says something like ?thanks,? or ?how do I?.?? I respond as quickly as I can. I answer ALL questions. I prefer to answer as a message rather than a comment, but will do either.

That gets me through my comments.

I then look at my inbox, in this way. 1. If it is a canned company written message, I delete it without reading it. 2. If I don?t really know you, and you give me a pitch, I delete it without reading any more of it. 3. If you respond to something I sent you with an unrelated pitch, I delete it without reading it. 4. If you have clicked ?reply to all? to someone else?s message, sending YOUR message to THEIR friends, I delete it without reading it. I send one warning that this is extremely bad manners, and if it happens again, delete them as friends. 5. I look for messages that have a question in the subject. I answer all of them as best I can. 6. I read the other emails, and respond where appropriate.

That gets me through my emails.

I then go to each of the groups to which I belong, and scan for the latest activity. If it is a post newer than the last time I was there, I read it, and comment if appropriate. I do this for every group, and every discussion in the group.

I am now ready to look for friends and associates. I begin each day at the members page, starting with the newest member. Don?t underestimate the power of being the first to leave someone a welcome message. If they are still on the site their first time, it is even better. If they are on their first time on the site, and did not come with a bunch of friends already, it is better yet. If they are online, I click add as friend.

I visit the member?s page. Here are things I look for. 1. If there is no picture, I probably won?t end up doing business with them very soon. I understand that some people might not want to put their own picture there, but put SOMETHING there. 2. If the headline still says, ?Bill?s page,? I know they haven?t been around networks very long, and could probably use some resources. 3. If there are multiple banners, etc. (I call them spam opps), I pass by them without reading any of them, leave my welcome and go to the next person. 4. If there are multiple videos, picture galleries, etc. there, I sometimes leave my comment, and sometimes don?t. I hate it when my computer takes minutes to load someone?s page. 5. I look at the website address. If it is ?billsbusiness.com,? I give them more credibility than if it is thisisagreatbusiness.com/welcomepage/newuser/?id=bill. If it is the latter, I know they can use my help, if they ask for it. If it is the former, I read one line of how they describe it to decide if I am going to click or not. I use ((( http://website.ws/gkozy1 ))) to create simple domain names for my site. Then I forward my affiliate URL to the simple related domain name. 6. If the page is hard to read because of conflicting colors and background pictures, I mentally check them off, but leave my message anyway, since I am there. 7. If they are not already my friend from another network, I click the friend request button, if they are someone I think I might work with.

That all takes between 1 and 10 seconds. I then click to paste my first message. I offer them something without pitching them. I happen to have the SuccessvilleNews.com site where I post people?s business links for free, so I use that. When I was just starting, my first thousand or so messages were, ?Hi. I?m new. Wanna be friends?? That got me one of two responses: ?I?m new too. Let?s learn together,? or ?I can help you find your way around.? Both are beneficial.

I try to communicate once a week with all my friends on every network, without it being a blatant sales pitch. I started with ?Did you learn anything new this week that I might be able to use in my business?? Now, I generally just ask if there is anything I can do to help them build their business.

Building a business this way is not the easiest, and perhaps not the quickest, way to do it. However, it has one characteristic which is invaluable: it is duplicatable, except for one thing--it requires work. For those who really think there is a business that is ?free,? and once you join it the money piles in without anyone ever doing any work, good luck. For those of you who aren?t afraid of work, what I can tell you is that these guidelines have produced great results for me.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions -- that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act -- not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions -- who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Where are all the good prospects?

Many networkers seem convinced they don't live anywhere near them!

Fact is, there are. (No matter how small of a town or city you live in).

Virtually everywhere there are people who would like to change their lifestyle, but who have no clue how to do that. There are also people in need of our products and services.

So, what's the best way to "tap in" to this goldmine of prospects known as the "local market"?

We'll answer this by approaching it from two directions:

1) people you naturally come in contact with and

2) services that can put you in contact with even more people who may be candidates for our opportunity (or product/service).

To get started, let's define terms.

"Local Market Prospects" refer to people who live or work in the same general area as you. In other words, people you come in contact with (or COULD come in contact with) on a daily basis.

They are not necessarily people you know (although they can be).

Approach Number One : Think about places you go and the people you cross paths with and practice alert living. Be on the lookout for sharp prospects wherever you go.

Example: You visit a local restaurant. You have a sharp, friendly food server who catches your attention. Right away, you observe this person has great people skills, a strong work ethic and is "on the ball".

Here's how you can EASILY prospect this person. Let's call him "Sam", and here's what you can say:

Sam, listen I want to thank you for your great service this afternoon, it's some of the best service I've had in a restaurant this year (Now at this, "Sam" should be all smiles as you've just paid him a well deserved compliment). You then proceed: Listen Sam, I own a business here in the area and always keep an eye out for sharp people and you definitely caught my attention today. Let me ask you a question: do you keep your work options open? (Now, if Sam really is a sharp, heads-up person what's he gonna say? Obviously "yes", to which you respond): Good for you, Sam. I think you'll be glad you do! Tell you what, you're working right now and I'm busy myself, I'm heading off to meet someone, but let's do this. Let me get your contact information and I'll drop you a line tomorrow (or when he get's off later the same day) and give you some more information on our opportunity and who we're looking for and see if we've got a match". Then you simply write down his information and you've just generated a strong local lead. Now, what makes it so strong is this: you've had a chance to MEET your prospect personally, observe their work ethic, their personality, and their people skills. How much stronger is THAT than simply calling a prospect "cold" on the phone? This is powerful.

And it's not just limited to restaurants (although people in this industry often make excellent networkers). No, you can do this virtually anywhere.

Approach Number Two: Now, what can you do to come into contact with qualified local prospects in a "leveraged way"?

Join a lead referral network!

These are groups that meet locally and refer prospects to one another.

You simple attend a small meeting in your area and share a little about yourself and your business and you can immediately tap into the leveraged power of business networking.

Well, we all know that it's tax season, but what we sometimes forget is that it is also the season for scammers trying to steal our identity.

-Personally, I've already received probably twenty emails purportedly from the IRS, requesting my information so that I can receive my refund, or some other form of money from the IRS. These phising schemes always appear to be a legitimate IRS email, but of course are from some other source trying to get my Social Security number and other information. To date, taxpayers have forwarded more than 33,000 of these scam e-mails, reflecting more than 1,500 different schemes, to the IRS. Always remember, the IRS would NEVER use email to contact taxpayers about their tax issues and definitely never to ask for information from a tax payer.

-Another phising scheme involves the new rebates from the economic stimulus plan. To get your rebate under the plan, if you are eligible, you will just need to file your 2007 tax return. However, scammers are posing as the IRS, requesting taxpayers? information in order for the taxpayer to receive their economic stimulus rebate. Once again, the IRS would NEVER use email to contact taxpayers about their tax issues.

HELPFUL TIP: If you are unsure if your email is truly from the stated source, NEVER click the link. Always open a new web page and put in the address yourself (in this instance, www.irs.gov). You can then check on whether or not it is a valid email. Another way to check is to put your cursor on the link (without clicking!) and the actual address where you will go (not what the link says) will show up either right there under your cursor or down at the bottom of your screen. I always check this way before clicking any link.

My husband is retired and we went to New Mexico twice last year during February and March. Freshly baked cookies. What kid can resist?

If you were like me growing up, the smell of cookies brought you running! My mom baked the most incredible chocolate chip cookies. She had to hide 'em or else they were GONE before my dad ever had a chance to get one!

But try handing a cookie to an adult and what happens?

Sometimes, they hesitate.

Why?

Some adults tend to "over think" or "over analyze" stuff. We say to ourselves things like: "hmmm, do I really need the extra calories today" or "how close is dinner" or "I just brushed my teeth".

Now imagine this.

You're over at a friend's house. After dinner they bring out some freshly baked cookies and offer you one. You hesitate, and say: "I really shouldn't". Instead of arguing, your friend simply smiles at you and slyly says: Hey, I'm sure you're right... and slowly begins pulling the cookies back and adds with a grin: "I'll bet you wouldn't like these fresh from the oven, chewy hot morsels and a cool, tall glass of milk much anyway".

What happens?

More likely than not, you reach for 'em!

As humans, we instinctively hate missing out of things -- don't we? We WANT what we can't have.

It's human nature.

This applies in network marketing too

In fact, the "cookie principle" can be a powerful addition to your sponsoring arsenal.

Let me explain.

Most networkers make the mistake of trying to DRAG prospects into their business. They have NO CLUE how much this approach is costing them.

The message they're broadcasting to their prospects is one of desperation. Prospects are left thinking: sheeesh, no way I'm doing some business where I've gotta be dragging people into it all the time.

End result? Your prospect runs to the nearest exit and vanishes!

So, what should you do when your prospect (who's already had ample time to review your opportunity) hestitates? When they tell ya: well, I'm gonna have to think about it.

Simple. You take the cookie away!

When you do, guess what happens? Yep, the right ones reach for it.

Here's an example of the "cookie principle" in action:

You've qualified your prospect, and given them access to comprehensive information on your opportunity. They've carefully reviewed it but when you follow-up you get: "Let me think about it, I'm not sure I've got the time to do this". Your response?

Agree with them! "You know Darryle, you may be right. This may not be right for you".

Whoa! Guess what, that is NOT what Darryle is expecting you to say!

You see, you just agreed with him and he was expecting you to argue with him. Psychologically, it's disarming. It breaks an expected pattern of thought, and causes your prospect to THINK.

When you pull the cookie away, human nature is to what?

Reach for it!

Now, this is a powerful technique so a few words of warning are in order.

Don't use this with EVERYBODY. You see, some prospects really aren't right for your venture and the last thing you want to do is sponsor those! You'll end up wasting a lot of your valuable time working with the wrong people.

Instead, only use this technique with prospects you've interviewed and who you're convinced ARE right for your business.

This season, if you have receive a new computer or new software, check em for the gifts you might not know about. Many computers come with bundled software that includes Adware, Malware and even Spyware. You may not find it until you launch the software program. It may give you a message that says it needs to connect to a site to complete the registration. Make sure you read the entire license agreement.

I know of many stories about how a user had to do a complete restore on their new computer just days after getting it. These stories involve the user spending hours on the phone with customer support trying to resolve the problem. In previous years, Dells customer support has been swamped after the holidays with calls from new users asking for help. Before you get online with the new computer, insure the AntiVirus and Firewall is functioning. The computer will probably prompt you that it needs to get updates. Check what the update is before agreeing to the install. Make sure you get the MS updates needed too.

If after all this, you still don't know which updates or installs to agree to, there are help sites that provide assistance.

Check the products site first, they may have customer support or even a Forum.

The first thing you need to do is to conduct market research on your target market. You need to know if the product you wish to sell will actually be saleable to them or not. This is because while a particular product may sell well in one area doesn?t necessarily mean it will also sell well in another area. It was late, I had put off going to the Software Convention till the last minute. I just had to watch my favorite show on TV, "S-Files". Its that episode where the Computer Salespeople all turn into Pod People and ,,,,well never mind. Its really scary!

So I'm driving down the lonely one lane road from my house to the Convention. Its dark and the shadows are creepy, I'll never watch S-Files again, I swear! I pull into the parking lot, the convention is being held in the old YMCA. Geez, its dark, only 1 parking lot light and its flickering on and off. As I walk up to the entrance, I remember the old story about how, back in the Dot.Com days, when they tanked, the building was used as a makeshift morgue, to hold all the bodies of the CEO?s who committed suicide.

I get this really creepy feeling on the back of my neck as I go in,,,,oh, its just a Linux software salesman at the first booth. Is it my imagination or are his eyes glowing?

I head to the registration desk to get a program. I see the place is kind of empty, guess cause its so late. Well, I'm here to see who is offering the latest demos and what kind of freebies I can score.

The front booths are usually the big sellers and they never give away freebies or demos. So I head to the back, hmmm, the lights back here are terrible!

Here's a booth, Anti-Spyware 4 U. The salesman shuffles up to me and says "Please take a demo of our new product". I look at it, it says this is the latest greatest software to combat Spyware. I take the CD out of the plain paper cover and look at the Logo. Its just a plain shiny cd? Wow I can see myself in it I remark.

"We spared no expense" a voice says behind me, making me jump. I didn't even know he was behind me. Wait, I should have seen him behind me in the reflection off the CD. I I've got to be imagining things I say to myself.

I ask the salesman for a brochure about their other products and as he hands it to me, our fingers brush each others. Jeez! His fingers are as cold as ice! Well, he is a salesman after all.

I thank him and head off to the other booths, seeing that I've gotten here too late after all, everybody is leaving. I decide to swing by the refreshments table to see if I can at least get a drink and some cookies.

It sure is dark in here I think again as I come up to the table. As I scan the table, a little old lady comes up and asks me if Id like any milk and cookies. Yes Mam I reply. She hands me a little plate with cookies and paper cup of something white. I assume its milk, but its so dark in here! And there seems to be a fog or steam on the surface of the milk. Well beggars cant be choosers I think to myself as I thank her. She gives me a freaky cackling laugh as I turn away, stunned I turn back around and to my Horror, there is no-one there! Where in blazes did she go ?

I'm out of here my mind screams to me as I head for the door at a ever faster walk. In a minute I'm in my car with the doors locked and the engine warming up.

Whew, That was the strangest Convention I've ever seen. All the way home I've got a death grip on the wheel, just waiting for something to jump out of the shadows. Like a IBM salesman, now that would be scary!

If only I had known the other horrors that awaited me! I breathe a sigh of relief as I close and lock the living room door behind me. Still shaking my head I head over to my computer to try out this latest and greatest Anti-Spyware Software. As it boots, I get a message to disable my own Anti-Spyware program. I thing this odd, but I remember reading somewhere online that some programs can conflict with others so I comply.

After a few seconds I get a message that the new Program is installed and it needs to connect to get possible updates. So I get online and let it do its thing. A reboot is needed it says, OK so I reboot. The computer comes up and I get online to check out the latest results of the Mullet contest. what's this ? This isn't my Homepage, it?s a site where you can ,,,Holy Hand Grenades! Its Porn!

I close the Browser and man alive, I'm beset by about a dozen pop ups offering me things that, well, no decent person would want. I'm figuring now that I've been had by this Anti-Spyware CD.

I do a Restore and get back to my Online Mullet competition site. Then I remember that I need to transfer some money in my savings to my checking account. So I head to the Bank site and take care of it. I must be tired, the computer seems slow to me. I check my mail and the wait to login is frustrating.

I decide to call it a night. I'll take care of it tomorrow. After a tossing and turning night and dreams of my computer melting, the new day dawns. With a cup of coffee I head to the computer to see who won the Mullet Contest. The boot takes forever and the login freezes the first time so I have to power off and back on again.

I'm really mad by now. I've been had by some sleazy software company! I finally get online but the Mullet competition site wont load. I cant tell if it?s the computer or maybe the online connection.

As it dawns on me that I'm going to have to take it in for service, I hope I've got some extra in my savings to cover it. I head to the Bank site but it wont load either. Then I notice the Hard Disk light blinking away. I'm not doing anything at the time so it shouldn't be accessing anything. Cursing, I turn the computer off and pick up the phone to call the bank.

I get a live person after waiting only 5 minutes so I figure the day may be improving. I give her my account info and she comes back saying "I show that account being closed last night after all money was withdrawn"! .

There must be a mistake I say, she checks it again and says its true. The money in the account was transferred to a Bank she has never heard of in ,,,,Transylvania of all places. As I hang up in shock, I could have sworn I heard her laughing just like the old lady at the convention did last night.

I figure I better head to the Police Station to get some help. In a Panic I head for town. As I make the last turn into town, I glance towards the location of the YMCA, where all this started, only to see its not there! Its burned to the ground! Stunned, I stop in the street and get out. Nothing but ashes. The Man in the car behind me gets out and asks me if I'm ok. I mumble I'm lucky to be alive, I could have died in there last night. Puzzled the man says, but the YMCA burned down 2 nights ago!

As I get back into the car, I glance at the spot on the seat where I put the CD and the Pamphlet. Gone. Just a little pile of dust. At the Police station, a sergeant takes down my story and informs me I've been the victim of online Identity theft. As I'm leaving, A couple of kids run by, in costumes, yelling "Happy Halloween"

To put this article about online safety into proper perspective, we'll use Medieval defense tactics. This is accomplished by 3 methods. First, a firewall...'The Castle Moat' so to speak. A firewall can't see inside your computer beforehand though, so if any viruses or spyware were present before the firewall was installed then its of no use. Of course, its extremely good at preventing new attacks.

Second, a anti-virus program.... 'The Castle Drawbridge! They will not provide much help with spyware, but good virus protection is as desirable as one of Avaris's dreams!

One drawback can be the updates, of course. If you've just updated Wednesday night and a virus hits the next day, then you may not be protected till next Wednesday night, and by then it may be too late. If you're smart, you will have signed up for email alerts with the provider, or even better, you'll have a anti-virus program that has a real time update feature.

I get the tingles when I see that little pop-up saying a update is available and click here. Its downloaded ,installed, and updated in about 20 seconds! A new virus or Trojan or God forbid, a new keylogger can hit the internet and spread in a matter of days, and I'm sure this must make the definition writers lives a living hell.

I have great admiration for them as they could have been wealthy doctors, but they have chosen to help us... the end users. (moment of silence here)

Last, we have anti-spyware programs,'The Flaming oil'! (my favorite). Their update features are like the anti-virus programs, so you have to be as vigilant with this method of defense too as you would be with the others.

I've heard there are people out there that don't even know when their updates run, or even if its configured to do so! I refuse to believe this sordid rumor!

So you've got your defenses set up, you're looking good. But the best defense is a good offense, attack! That's what some organizations do. They prowl the net looking for websites that harbor drive-by downloads, URL Re-Directing and such. When they find them, they shut them down, or report them so effective protection can be manufactured.

These people have my sincere thanks for what they do. With identity theft on the rise and Websense reporting that the average computer has 28 items of Spyware on it, we need all the help we can get.

Oh sure, you're saying not my computer !

Well, lets discuss those little boxes that you click "I Agree" to when you download something. Do you read the entire statement? This is one way spyware has become so rampant, because so many downloads have extra software included in them. These can be harmful to your computers well being. KeyLoggers, popups, adware, malware...

Need I go on?

So my idea is that we need these shining knights from the castle to journey forth on a quest. They will be little robots or spiders like the search engines use. They will be given absolute power over harmful programs they find. They will be like Gort in the movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

Dell recently reported that 12% of their calls were for spyware damage, Microsoft says half of their reports of system crashes are caused by spyware. These calls cost these companies millions of dollars in revenue, which they then pass the costs of onto us, the consumers.

Who knows, if viruses and spyware ever get controlled, the average computer may only cost a dollar!

The key is taking action. Find someone you can model your business after and learn how they do it. Just do something!

If you build it they necessarily may not come. You have to market your business. I see so many people out there starting businesses but they don't want to put forth the effort and spend a little money on advertising. If no one knows your site is there, how are you ever going to build your business?

Utilize as many sources of traffic as you can. The higher the numbers to whom you market, the better the signup or conversion rate will be.

Of course I deleted it and proceeded to go about my online chores, but later that email got me thinking, what if there was a 'Online Safety' reality show?

There would be contestants.... Say on a sunny south sea island beach, and each contestant has to accomplish a variety of tasks to win. You would get to vote one or more contestants off the show if they were too good or maybe a ringer. The same for the really dumb ones,after all, it would have to be exciting to keep the viewers interested.

So the basic task would be to succeed in staying safe online while surfing the web, and completeing various online challenges. For example, they would have to insure the computer given them was secure.... Ya know, updated with the latest from MS, etc. Then they would have to get online and insure their provider was also credible and choose which browser they want to use too.

Oh, don't forget their anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall programs, gotta make sure those work.

Now they are ready for the competition. They would have to send and receive, and reply to emails.

Hopefully they would know how to set up their email program to protect against attachments and pictures infecting them, and if not they would have to learn. Not only that, but in addition they would have to know weather or not to reply to a email, because in today's game it could be a phish or worse, a scam to get them to enter their personal info at a fake bank site.

Ok, on to the rest of the challenges, like buying a product and insuring the website used is safe.

If the checkout does not have that lil' lock icon at the bottom right, they could be in for trouble. Continuing on, they have to visit a variety of websites to gain knowledge about a given subject, hopefully they wont pick up a 'drive by download', resulting in a keylogger or a bot being installed on the computer used to compete.

Another task would be to register at a forum or blog and participate. Some programs that run forums and blogs are susceptible to hacks, hopefully they wont lose their personal info they gave when they registered to nefarious users set to sabotage their computers.

Then it gets tough. They have to download and install a program, something like a weather update service or maybe one that tracks favorite sports scores. A lot of these are loaded with spyware, adware or even malware.

At this point, some will have failed. They will have forgotten to update their antivirus or said yes to a popup that allowed some evil program to glean their passwords or such. The show will be down to a few who were knowledgeable enough beforehand or will have learned sufficiently while on the show to stay in the running.

After the last commercial, its only a half hour show ya know, it all climaxes with them visiting their bank to pay bills and access their account balance. If they can safely do this and not have given up their holy grail of information, the bank account info, they will be the winner.

The prize? Vegas of course. After all, not insuring your online security is gambling, and the house always wins. By the way, who do you think they would pick to be the host of the show?

The captain, after running up on deck, examined the ship with his spyglass. "Shiver me hard drives" he bellowed as he saw the lay of her jib.

"Shes a wardriver! " (Note of historical Interest, a Wardriver is a term used to describe a way of searching for unsecure wireless networks.)

"They be after plundering information on the ships server! Quick me mateys, prepare to repel boarders." The crew scrambled to turn their laptops off while the Captain rushed to turn the wireless router off.

Up on deck, the crew watched as the dark ship faded into the night.

The Captain had no sooner settled back at his computer when again the cabin door burst open, this time it was the cook. "Blimey Captain, all my recipes files are gone!" This was bad news because the cooks famous secret recipe for chile con carne was highly sought after since winning 1st place at the Pirates ball last year. Thank the Kraken we have our backups" the Captain growled. The cook, cursing, left.

Well, back to my email the captain thought. He pushed the send/receive button on his email client. "Blow me down" he bellowed, (Pirate Captains bellow a lot) "Whats all this SPAM mail doing in my inbox?"

This was getting as back as a case of scurvy.

As he sat, his rage boiling, he became aware of a lot of yelling coming from the crews quarters. "Now what" he cursed as he made his way forward. Upon entering the crew area he was assailed by a thunderous din of curses. (Pirates curse a lot)

The Spainiard was yelling he couldn't get his new game, "Pirates Revenge " to load. The Italian couldn't get into his stock portfolio. (Yes pirates have retirement plans too). The others were drowned out by the first mate yelling about his Blog being Hacked.

As he surveyed the carnage, the captain noticed one of the crewman sitting calmly, using his laptop with apparently no problems. Bellowing loudly for quiet, he asked the crewman who he now remembered came from the land of Unix, why he was not upset.

He looked up, and said "Why Captain, I've got a AntiVirus program along with good AntiSpyware and a reliable Firewall. I'm protected from brute force attacks, Phishing emails and drive by downloads." He went on to say that it looked like the ships server was accessed through the wireless router, which was not secured with WEP (wired/wireless equivalent privacy).

"Arrrgg", he bellowed, the IT dogs back at the Island hideaway had told him all was peachy with the network when they sailed to pilage and plunder.

The crewman whose name was Billy said he could get things ship shape by giving the other crewman the CD's of his AntiSpyware, AntiVirus and his 3rd party Firewall.... for a price! "Aye," the Captain replied wit a feeling of dread, "Whats your price?"

Soon all onboard were back online and secure. Billy had his pockets stuffed with pieces of eight and of course, was wearing the Captains hat, looking mighty pleased with his bargaining skills.

The Captain headed back to his cabin, worried that mutiny may be afoot. He had heard Billy telling the crew about those cursed Macs!

The lesson learned here was obvious; You need to secure your network. AntiVirus and AntiSpyware is a must, So is a reliable Firewall. Anything less, you might as well be walking the plank, Matey!

A person sits somewhere, writing a new virus, a new application of Spyware. It is put onto the Internet and Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware vendors begin to develop definitions to combat it, maybe even to stop it permanently. These fixes are incorporated into the new versions of the software they sell, or distribute as freeware.

Existing companies, businesses, and users struggle to keep up with what to use, overwhelmed, their lifeline to the Internet depends on it.

In this portion of the ecosystem you have; The end user. YOU! Your Internet Provider, Hosting Service, ect. The businesses on the Internet, all of em. The existing companies and vendors providing the Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Programs. Adding to this ecosystem, new companies start up to get into the rapidly exploding business, marketing their own software. More additions occur as new businesses start up to sell the software the companies have produced. New and old online users buy upgraded and new software to try and protect their personal information from being stolen.

Interlaced into all the above is the knowledge required to know how to protect ourselves with the basics. A hardware or software Firewall, Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware.

Whew! Ok, rest.

Point to ponder while resting.Recent eWeek.com tests reveal that some Vendors are failing to provide solutions when it comes to finding and permanently destroying Viruses and Spyware.

Then let?s look at it from another angle shall we? Without the person somewhere in the world writing the virus or Spyware, there would be no need for the person that is writing the program to combat it. There would be no need for the company that employs the person writing the programs to combat the virus or Spyware. No need for the Businesses that sell the programs the company markets. Still with me? Good. And finally, No need for the user, you, to protect yourself.

It is very unprofessional to cross out information on your business card. It is important to make sure everything is correct before distributing them. I think Paul Burks, Darryle Douglass, Ron Davidson and Durant Brockett should be brought up for fraud for running a scam on people who just want to make money on the internet.
